Karate-Do Training Maxims Students Should Consider

Character:

The ultimate aim of karate-do lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants. To seek perfection of character, to be sincere and honest; to show strong human spirit in all undertakings; to practice courtesy; and to control one’s temper; these are the essence of Karate-do". A Karate-ka’s personality is founded on kindness, humility, and gentleness. As a karate-ka improves his physical abilities and his knowledge of Karate-do, he/she will also gain more confidence, self-discipline and perseverance.

 Sincerity:

It is most important that a person realizes that a commitment is to be made when starting to learn Karate. A sincere Karate-ka learns Karate for noble, honest reasons. At no time should Karate be learned or taught for the sole purpose of winning a match, or defeating an adversary.

 Effort:

In Karate-do nothing comes easy. If you think you can learn Karate by just going to class a couple times a week, you are wrong. Karate-do has to be practiced on a regular, solitary basis, in addition to training in class with your Sensei and classmates. Perfection of techniques can not be achieved without a serious effort and a continuous training program. Train hard with your body and mind. When your body becomes exhausted, let your mind take over and push yourself to endure the training.

 Respect:

Respect yourself, your Sensei, and your classmates. A Karate-ka should not do or say anything that is considered disrespectful to your Sensei or classmates. Karate-do itself is due your respect. "It is a noble martial art, and those who take pride in breaking boards or smashing tiles, or boast of being able to perform outlandish feats, really know nothing about karate. They are playing around in the leaves and branches of a great tree, without the slightest concept of the trunk.

 Self-control:

As a karate-ka trains, his ability to control his body increases. He becomes able to strike targets with great precision and force. Karate training also improves your ability to control your feelings and emotions. A Karate-ka does not go about seeking battles; but when faced with an enemy, a Karate-ka resorts to using Karate technique only after all peaceful means fail.

 Essence of Karate

The essence of Karate philosophy is the breaking of attachments. We live by memory and experience, and tend to fear and avoid things which are beyond our experience. The purpose of Karate-do is to teach us to live fearlessly --- not by memory, but in the present --- without attachments to anything but life itself. Live brilliantly, fulfill your purpose, and then let go of life when the time is right, without fear or regret or second thoughts.
